Why Won’t My Gas Oven Light When the Burners Work?

If your gas oven won’t light but the burners work normally, the gas supply is probably not the main problem. The oven has its own ignition system, so the issue may be with the igniter, burner, or gas valve.

On most gas ovens, the igniter glows rather than sparks. If it glows but the burner doesn’t light, the igniter is usually weak. It still glows, but it can’t draw enough current to open the gas valve. That’s the most common reason a gas oven won’t light. Less often, the igniter is out of position or the burner ports are clogged.

If the igniter isn’t sparking or glowing at all, it may have failed and need replacement. Because you’re working with a gas appliance, avoid bending or adjusting ignition parts yourself. If the basic checks don’t solve it, have a qualified appliance technician test the ignition and gas system.
